چکیده

We demonstrate that the BCM learning rule follows directly from STDP when pre- and postsynaptic neurons fire uncorrelated or weakly correlated Poisson spike trains, and only nearest-neighbor spike interactions are taken into account.

A critique of BCM behavior verification for STDP-type plasticity models

Rate based (Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe, BCM) and spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) are the two principal learning behaviors found at cortical synapses. Some BCM induction protocols have been shown to be compatible with STDP rules, thus combining both forms of plasticity. However, we demonstrate that the majority of actual experimental BCM protocols cannot be reproduced by STDP. This sensi...

Title : A triplet model of spike - timing dependent plasticity generalizes the BCM rule to spatio - temporal inputs

Synaptic strength depresses for low, and potentiates for high activation of the postsynaptic neuron. This feature is a key property of the well-known Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro (BCM) synaptic rule, which has been shown to maximize the selectivity of the postynaptic neuron, and thereby offers a possible explanation for experience-dependent cortical plasticity such as orientation selectivity. Howev...

BCM and Membrane Potential: Alternative Ways to Timing Dependent Plasticity

The Bienenstock-Cooper-Munroe (BCM) rule is one of the best-established learning formalisms for neural tissue. However, as it is based on pulse rates, it can not account for recent spike-based experimental protocols that have led to spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) rules. At the same time, STDP is being challenged by experiments exhibiting more complex timing rules (e.g. triplets) as we...

The Relationship Between Spike-Timing-Dependent Plas- ticity (STDP) and Sliding Threshold (BCM) Synaptic Modification

There has been an increased interest in a novel type of synaptic plasticity spike-timingdependent plasticity (STDP), in which potentiation or depression occurs depending on the temporal order of the pre and postsynaptic spikes; see Fig. 1a. However, it is not clear how STDP relates to the best studied form of synaptic plasticity – classical LTP and LTD. The two kinds of plasticity must be someh...
